Over the winter break, I rediscovered my love for knitting. I used to knit a lot, but it’s been a while since I picked up my needles. However, I recently fell head over heels in love with knitting all over again, and I am now completely obsessed! In this blog, I’ll share weekly what I’ve been working on, what yarns and patterns I use, and all the other fun stuff that comes with knitting. In this first post, I’ll talk about the Drops yarns I recently discovered and love!
Choosing the yarns (alpaca yarn all the way!)
If you’re a knitter, you’ll understand the struggle of finding the perfect yarns – they need to be soft, luxurious, and have just the right fiber composition. And let’s not forget about the price! Unfortunately, yarns with nice fibers like alpaca, mohair, wool, and silk are quite expensive. These yarns can make or break a knitting project, so I needed to find a way to get my hands on them. I just can’t stand those acrylic yarns that are abundant nowadays. If I invest several hours in a sweater project, I want to love the way the final product feels. Alpaca is by far my favorite, as alpaca yarns are so luxurious and soft. (And did I mention – alpacas are just so cute!)
Where to buy yarns?
That’s why I was so happy to discover the website Wool Warehouse, a UK company that ships to the US. I was so excited to find this site, as I love Drops yarns and they had a huge selection of those at very affordable prices. Drops is a Danish company, and their yarns are great in terms of quality and fibers – Drops yarns are the exact kind of yarns that I love!
My (Huge) Order of Pastel-Colored Drops Yarns
I went a bit overboard when I was ordering and got all these beautiful pastel-colored Drops yarns. Maybe I was just so excited for spring, but I couldn’t resist. I shared this picture with my mom, who also loves knitting, and she told me to hide the yarns from my husband. But it was too late, and it’s fair to say there was quite a bit of head-shaking involved. That said, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.
The Wool Warehouse international shipping rate was very reasonable – it was 4.99 GBP for up to 4 lbs, and as I ordered a lot, they charged me 9.98 GPD (approximately $12). I spent a lot less than I would have had I ordered from a store here in the US. They did take a while (around 2 weeks) to arrive, but they’re worth the wait! Also, they were nicely packed and arrived in chiffon bags.
Here are the Drops yarns I ordered, enough of each to make a sweater:
- Drops Air: One of the softest yarns I’ve ever touched. It’s made of 65% alpaca, 28% polyamide, and 7% wool, and is both lightweight and fluffy. I ordered Drops Air in “Wheat,” “Pink Marble,” “Pink Sand,” “Pearl Grey,” and “Fog.”
- Drops Kid-Silk: Another luxurious yarn made of 75% mohair and 25% silk. I ordered Drops Kid-Silk in “Blue Mist” and “Moonshine.”
- Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk: This yarn is so soft and sweet. It’s made of 77% Alpaca and 23% Silk and is a wonderful composition. I ordered Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk yarn in “Light Sea Green,” “Light Grey,” and “Morning Mist.”
- Drops Melody: This yarn is a mix of 71% alpaca, 25% wool, and 4% polyamide for durability. It’s the chunkiest of the yarns, but it’s still so soft. I ordered Drops Melody in “Off White.”
- Drops Merino Extra Fine: A soft, non-itchy 100% merino wool yarn. I ordered Drops Merino Extra Fine in “Ice Blue” for a specific sweater project.
I also might have ordered quite a few circular knitting needles, but you can never have too many, right?
Upcoming knit projects
I have quite a few Scandinavian sweater knit projects in mind!
One pattern that caught my eye was the Drops Studio Seaside Watcher sweater. I was looking for patterns for the Air yarn, and I stumbled upon this pattern.
I have started working on the Seaside Watcher sweater, using the Drops Air in Pink Sand. I’m almost done with the body and the second sleeve, and I hope to have the sweater completed soon.
I can’t wait to share more pics with you next week!
